The hype that was built around Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine even before its shooting had begun had raised the expectations of the audience very high and the viewers were almost certain that the maker of Chandni Bar, Page 3 and Fashion had something special in store.
But somehow this publicity did not work for Heroine. Although the film did fairly well overseas, it got a very frigid response in India.
The reasons were several.
1. Firstly in India a film with no powerful male lead works with difficulty.
2. Secondly, the story seemed very predictable since the very beginning. A heroine, her rise and downfall-it it not what we have been watching in a number of films lately-Fashion, Raaz 3, Dirty Picture had similar storyline.
3. Weak music could have been another reason as sometimes even if a film has a weak story, it manages to draw audience because of its songs. It was boring.
4. Kareena Kapoor's continuous crying and cribbing bored the audience after a certain point of time.
5. Punch was missing from the film. Everybody knows how Bollywood treats yesteryear actors, the concept of casting couch and why stars find it difficult to make friends. The plot of 'Heroine' has no ups and downs.
